My search for an excavator has resulted in purchase of a Hymac 580. I will try to keep you posted on the progress of the machine. Luckily I found it just about 15 minutes away from my home.
I started by reading just about all the threads on this forum describing other peoples restorations. I must say there are some impressive mechanics out there. Very inspirational to read Antevantes https://www.maskinisten.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=5050 work on his Hymacs.
I also purchased Jeremy Rowlands book, "The Illustrated History of Hymac" which gave me some interesting background information about the company and its products.
I will start with some pictures, I know you all appreciate that.
If I am correct this is the slewmotor. It appears to have a different color from the rest of the machine. Maybe it has been replaced.
Cleaned out beneath the seat, apparently the driver was thirsty
It has been refitted with "joysticks".
A lot of old grease, dirt and beer cans. I found a small metal plate on the right inside of the door with the number 7395, could this be a serial number?
On the day I went to pick it up from the seller the hose to the scoop blew. Not a big problem though, nothing that would stop us from loading it on a trailer.
However, running out of fuel halfway up on the trailer did. While the seller drove back to his farm to get diesel I stayed behind to redirect traffic. Luckily we
were standing on a small gravel road so not a lot of traffic.
The one problem the seller mention was that one of the chains to a drive wheel was broken. He had temporarily fixed it with a regular bolt which of course snapped
off. I have called Pettersson in Gävle and he has chain links on the shelf so this should not be a problem to fix.
The first things I would like to fix, besides cleaning it up course:
Fix the chain to the drive wheel. The chain seem very loose/slack. Does anybody if they should be loose or tight? I will post an image of this.
The machine rotates and will not stay in its position when standing on a slope which is quite annoying. Any ideas what may cause this?
