580C Mangled Track Gearbox

I'm looking some advice from the experts on here as you lot seem to know a thing or two...
I was pulling out tree's and tracking backwards as there was overhead wires and I needed to keep the boom down...The RH track stopped working and made a terrible rasping noise.
I thought it could be the chain drive had snapped or stripped a sprocket.
I got her home by lifting her on one side with the dipper and using the other track.

Today I've removed the chain guard plate and the sprocket is wobbling about and rasping the gears.

I got the chain drive split and removed the small sprocket and it is either the output shaft snapped, the brake side bearing, or worst case scenario, the shoulder that holds the bearing...nightmare!!

I need to get the track off to remove the gearbox plate but can only identify one track pin with a "dimple"...How do I remove it?

How do I remove the output shaft?

How do I remove the pulley wheel for the brakes?

Plus any advice at all on how to do this would be greatly appreciated..

We will do our best to help you. Im not the best at writing i english but I will try

I guess you got the parts manual? Always a good start.
Before you try to split the track. Try to put it of whitout split it.
First thing is to realese the track tension. Loosen the grease connection and then try to pull the idler wheel back with the bucket. Often the big spring behind the idler wheel will stuck on the frame under it so it does not goes in enough. Then just use a hydralic jack or lift the spring up a bit and it will slide in.

No use a chain connected to the bucket and try to drag the track a side when you drive the machine forward.
If you took the drive chain of the brakes shouldent stop you from just trackning forward with the ”okay side”.
If you need more slack you can take the top roller of.


Once you get into the gearbox its pretty easy to take apart.
The brake drum is secured with a small ”key” nr 51 in the parts manual then it should just realese the brakepads and pull it of the axel. Somtimes a bit heating is neccesary.

Hello, let the grease out from the track cylinder and lift the track off. If you are going to repair the gearbox ? the best you can do is to buy a workshop manual on ebay that will help you most of all.

Thanks guys...Think I will use tractor and chains to remove track....Have let the grease out before to replace the top roller so know what to do...

I have the workshop manual but my father has borrowed it to study it so won't get it back until tomorrow.


As I said, I have removed the chain from the small sprocket and removed the brakes.. I just don't know how to remove small key to remove brake pulley. I have also managed to slacken 4 of the bolts on the inspection cover over the gearbox..Two are stuck and might have to be cut off. I will see when I have the track off.

By the looks of things and the amount of play in the output shaft, I suspect it has sheared although the bearing on the outer (brake) side may have disintegrated. Are there any tips to removing this bearing as I don't have oxy-acetylene.


The weather here in Ireland is a limiting factor as the machine is outside as couldn't steer it into shed
I will try again tomorrow and try to post what I've found.

Any advice from someone who has replaced gears in the transmission would be greatly appreciated as I'm sure there are plenty of pitfalls...

I have no experience what so ever of Hymac, but it seems like everyone that owns a Hymac has refurbished at least one gear box on their jewels. There are plenty of examples in this section.
Tip to all of you skilled Hymacers that hesitate to reply in English: write in Swedish. The translation button is quite good.

I strongly recomend you to follow this forum thourougly. Start with Dh service, Antevante and Andy 80. From the beginning of their threads. Use some translation device on your computer or phone. Probably some technical terminology will be translated wrong but all the pictures will guide you anyhow. For me this forum has been tremendous help and inspiration. Most important: i have realised that nothing is impossibel. However you got tog get the acetylene- oxygen device or you will get stuck.

On the brake side of the output axel there is a plug. If you remove it you can hit the axel out. If I remeber correct.

On my machine i had to make new threads on every screw on the gearbox cover.

Had to cut the two bolts...As you can see, the bearing on the output shaft has collapsed and the pinion shaft is destroyed...Any advice on how to remove brake pulley on pinion shaft...there is a small key but I can't see how to remove it...
Am going away on Wednesday, with my girlfriend so won't get at this until next week
