Sad too se. Axels gears and bearings is the easy part. If the housing has damage after the bearing collapse that could be a bigger problem. But lets hope for the best! Youre not the first with this problem. A bit of a classic 580 problem...

There is first a circlip on the brake axel thats stops the drum from sliding out. If you can get a pulley mounted on the brakedrum and give it some heat the key will probably come along aswell. Its just lockning the drum from turning on the axel.

It is sad for me to see too....As you say, my biggest worry is the housing being damaged, although I am hopeful it is ok, as the damage happened quickly..

I think it is possible (according to the manual) to remove the brake pulley by screwing two 1/2" UNF threaded bolts into the pulley acting like a hub puller.


There is a breakers yard about 8km from me and he has at least a couple of 580c's and there are online guys, so sourcing parts isn't too difficult..


I'm sure It will be a job that gets gradually done, although my holiday will be spoiled as I will be thinking of solutions all the time, and not paying attention to my girlfriend...lol


I will update you guys as I proceed and will probably need more advice.

The Transfer pinion is wrecked and the large gear on the output shaft is badly damaged...The carrier?housing for the output shaft is damaged but not too bad so may be able to rub it down and use Loctite 6 to fit new bearing...

The bearing has completely disintegrated.

I have posted some photos.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the "plug" for the transfer pinion, located between the track motor and the drive chain housing? It's in one of the photos secured with a circlip...The manual is not clear.

Well done. Seems like a long shopping list...

The plug is locked by the circlip as you say. There is a threded hole in the center that you can use to drag it out. It can be really hard to get it loose. My best advice is to take the plug away on the opposite side and hit the axel from that side. Then the plug will come out aswell.

As can be seen, there is a lot of debris when I drained the oil...lucky the damage isn't worse.
Someone has been in here before as there is writing that says "bore out inner bush"...oh dear

Also, does anyone know the tread (1/4" UBF?) for the set screws to remove bearing retainer beneath brake hub?
Or a method to remove it?

I saw this thread recently. If you need to remove the outer bearing ring, strip the inner bearing ring and bearing balls. weld a Good bead on the surface of the outer ring, the hot bead Will make ring to shrink and make it easy to remove.

Unfortunately, the machine is outside and the weather is too wet to work at it, and I'm going away for a few days...

I hope the welder will work as it's about 50 m from power source?

I'm not sure if part of the outer ball race is still in the housing on the frame and removing aforementioned plug seems to be a problem.
I wish I knew what thread sizes for the drawing bolts to remove transfer pinion carrier and the sealing plug..The workshop manual is no help..

The only good news is that I can get all the parts from England, which will be easier than the local breakers as I would probably have to strip them out myself.

Regarding size/thread of the drawing screws:
What threading system is commonly used at Hymac?
Can it be metric (M6x0,75)? Else, British BSF (1/4" 26) or the American UNF (1/4" 28)?
Looks larger in the pics.....

My guess would be som sort of unc threads. I can check in the weekend. Last time a took my gearbox apart it was on my 580D wich has millimeter threads.

The bearing retainer behind the brake often get a bit stuck beacuse there is a gasket behind that gets glued togheter with time. If you just knock it a few times and try to make it ”turn” a bit around the axel the gasket will let it go.

The big plugs on the chain side can be tricky. On my 580BT I had to weld nuts on them and drag them out. The old threads were almost gone.

Ok...got a bit more done today, in between the rain...I knocked the bearing retainer round, as Antevante suggested and it came away easily...someone had used that blue, instant gasket paste, instead of a gasket..

I found a bolt from the brake cover fitted the big plug behind the transfer shaft, and have it almost pulled out, but someone has put a blob of weld in the space in the chain guard housing which stops the plug coming out completely It can be seen in the photograph as a bump over the plug..I may be able to grind it with angle grinder but it is too wet at the moment..
