LM 840 needs new Brakes

Hello from Austria,

i have an Volvo LM840 4WD, from 1969, still up and running. Now the brakes need to be serviced.



The part number 5 falls down, the brake was without function.

Thickness of disks measured: 11,2mm
Maybe the Cast-Iron plates (number 2 and the outer ones-not on picture) are worn out and new break-disks(number 7) do not affect?

What is the best way to renew this brake system (without buying a new wheel loader) ?

So what happens when you apply the brakes?

Nothing or is nr 5 falling down on the ground?

Sometimes, when i press the brake pedal, Nr.5 falls down, brake pedal has no pressure. Then i have to open the brake disks and put nr. 5 back.
Then i adjusted the brakes a little bit thighter, adjusted both brake cylinders.

Now is the question, which parts should i renew?

Ok så när han bromsar ramlar nr 5 bort ur sitt läge så han får ta isär o sätta den på plats igen.

Vad är slitet, är det lamellerna?

#6 is holder springs for pins #5, is there in place?

#4 are in place and in good shape? #2 moves freely back to starting pos when brake is released?

#4 is in good shape.
#2 moves freely in both directions. What is the minimum thickness of this part? Maybe too thin?

Springs and Clamps in good condition and in place.

Maybe they can help you with the minimum thickness of the brake discs too. The outer cover plate can be machined flat and it will be like new.

Hi,

i found out that new discs measure 12,5mm.

Machining the outer plate is a good idea, i think, i will do that.
What about the inner one?

# 6 are ok.
I turned OUT the screws(not on the picture) outside the brake, which are pushing on #2 (M12x1,25),
this tightens #5 and #8 a little bit more.
I will see, how long this will work.

Íve had the same problem on a Ferguson,
(same type brakes)
new brake disks diďnt help..
i found out that the play was to big so that the balls had lost the power at the end of the stroke.
fix with chimming to thicker brake disks
hope you understand..

we tightened some screews, reduced the play from the pedal to the brakes on some screws, it works .
