some of you may have been wondering what's under the big white bag, sat on the bench ... it'd been there a while and before I could really get on with the next job for the BIL I needed to progress that lil' project to get it off the bench ...
I'd bought it off a mate from a.n.other forum - the guy who brought my Hydrema home for me in 2014 and we had become good friends over the years since ...
he runs a low
loader and a few machines ...
has a yard based in his best friend's scrap yard and has full access to it, with the pick of whatever arrives ...
they get a lot of surplus kit from a couple of airports ...
and this was out of an aircraft de-icer ..
Deutz BF4M 1012 with a Sauer Danfoss 45G
frame VD pump and a .n.other conventional
gear pump on the back end of that ...
on a purpose built subframe with a load of ancillaries and 180L hyd tank ...
it all ran the
boom and pumps for the aircraft spray heads.
I was interested in the motor as it's identical to what is in the 'Drema and was a very cheap
spare to have sat ..
however after Paul had dropped it off, it was pretty obvious I had all the makings of a nice hyd power pack, so I've spent some time planning/building the same ...
so ...... there's rather a lot of this coming up .... not finished yet, but well on the way
the subframe was perfect for the engine, but I needed to extend it to carry the tank and various other 'bits'
I'd made up an extension and had it set up but it needed attaching and some layouts 'working out' ... so tank position needed to be determined
I'd made some mounts for the tank weeks earlier and fitted those so I could weld them to the new extended subframe/chassis, and still be able to remove the tank later, easily
I'd sorted all the ports in the tank weeks earlier too and was able to close all of them off in future if I needed to .. two feeds, two returns, a drain and a probe port
I also needed to fit the
oil cooler that came with the package ...
a lot of head scratching and
what if,s for a while ... but needed to get it all sat roughly in position to see if all my ideas would work out
also needed to locate a decent sized
battery somewhere too
having eventually sussed it all ... I needed to
strip it all back off to get it all firmly welded up ......
motor out and
into a new resting place for a day or so
tank back off
to leave me with a bare
chassis for attaching a few brackets, battery tray and firm up with the hot stick
much easier to roll it to weld, than weld it all positionally
followed by some paint
then pick it
down out the way
came up the following morning and looked like it had been snowing ... apple blossom every where off the crab apple tree
needed it off the bench as I wanted the whole bench for the next bit
3mm sheet of CR4 .. better than hot rolled sheet, as no mill scale on the surfaces, but needs to be kept dry as it rusts as soon as you look at it
set it out and chopped to make...
the bits for a
fuel tank
stashed in the dry, for the night
then needed to make some mounts ....
captivate the studs
and weld 'em on the underside
and check for a fit in the support brackets
then a neck top pate
and tack up the tank neck
before consolidating it all
check top plate for a fit
and drill fixing holes
before tapping the fixings .... tap looks 'pissed' ... it's an optical illusion of the camera ... it was cock on
and fix top
time to get things back together
and set up the tank support brackets
and both on
trial fit for the tank base
and mock up where to put the neck for best position .... was pretty sure this was where I wanted it, but wanted to see if if it worked for other things
decision made .. tacked in place
then some more trials
the not insubstantial
air filter had to live somewhere
and reckoned this was the easiest place to be able to plumb it into the turbo mouth
next up ..... MIG time
